Social Capital and Health Global Network

IV Workshop on Social Capital and Health

Padova, Italy, 4-5 October 2012

Second Call for Papers

Following the workshops in Berkeley (2006) Paris (2008) and Oslo (2010) we now invite the submission of draft papers or extended abstracts for a fourth workshop of the Social Capital and Health Global Network. This event will take place in Padova, Italy 4-5 October 2012 organized by the University of Padova. The venue of the workshop is at the "Archivio Antico" of Palazzo del Bo, Via 8 febbraio 1848 2, 35122 Padova, Italy.

During the last few years there has been a considerable increase in the interest and in the number of publications on the relation between social capital and health. The literature consists both of theoretical studies, studies based on micro-data within a single country and comparative cross-country studies at the aggregate and disaggregated levels. Relatively less attention has been devoted on the channels through which social capital influence health.

The workshop is open for all these types of contributions, and in particular for contributions that focus on an economic approach and contributions that aim at revealing the causal effect of social capital on health, especially if they go beyond reduced form models and try to identify the channels through which social capital influences health (e.g. health-related behaviors, social support, psychological support, enhanced circulation of health-relevant information, non opportunistic behaviors between patients and health care providers among others) .

Papers for the workshop will be selected on the basis of draft papers or extended abstracts. Although draft papers are preferred, abstracts (minimum 600 words) that describe methods, results and data (if relevant) will also be considered. The deadline for submitting draft papers or extended abstracts is April 30th 2012. Papers or abstracts must be submitted electronically (PDF or Word) by email to lorenzo.rocco@unipd.it. Authors will be notified about acceptance by June 15th and will be required to provide electronic versions (PDF or Word) of the final paper by September 1st. Papers will be posted on the workshop website in downloadable format. Each paper will have an appointed discussant.

For the first time, a unique opportunity of dissemination is offered to participants. A symposium of the Eastern Economic Journal (http://www.palgrave-journals.com/eej/index.html) will publish the best papers submitted and accepted to the workshop, to be selected by means of a further regular procedure of peer reviewing. Authors should clearly state in their initial submission whether they wish to be considered for the symposium.
